Clumsiness and Balance
A few things
are happening in your body as your pregnancy develops. First of all, and most obviously, you are
gaining weight and your belly starts protruding which makes your center of
balance completely different. When you
are carrying a heavy basket of laundry in front of you, you naturally lean
backward to counter the weight pulling forward.
The same thing is happening as your belly grows, only you never get a
chance to put down the laundry basket.
And therefore, you are ALWAYS leaning back and compensating in almost
every move you make. Getting in and out
of a car, sitting at a desk, or standing at a counter can become very
uncomfortable quickly.
And not only
is your center of balance thrown off, the hormones that are raging throughout
your body are also changing the way your joints work. Your knees, elbows,
shoulders, hips and other moving parts, are held together with tendons and
ligaments-the basic ‘rubber bands’ of the human skeleton. The changes in your hormone production cause
your tendons and ligaments to loosen, and become more forgiving of the
different needs for your body’s growth.
But since you are very used to the way your elbows and knees feel, many
of your everyday movements may not work the way they did when you were not
pregnant. So don’t feel bad if it seems
like you are spilling a lot more around the kitchen or in restaurants, or if
you think you have been tripping a lot lately, it’s all supposed to happen.
